2014 Goals

January 1, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 1 Comment

20140101-120146.jpg
I’m not the person to make New Year resolutions. I have seen people do it and never keep them. I’m not sure if it’s for a lack of commitment to self or if it’s just because they are doing it out of tradition. However, I am a very goal oriented person. At least, I like to think of myself this way. 🙂 If I make a goal and keep it before me, I will accomplish it.

What I decided to do for the year of 2014 is decide a few goals that I can commit to accomplishing for myself.

My list was pretty long. I typed it up and sent it to myself via email. Some of the things on my list were pretty private, but there are a few that I don’t mind sharing. I wanted them to be measurable goals. By doing this I eliminate general statements. I am very specific with them and I plan to hold myself to them.

My 2014 Goals
Simple things I want to do in 2014
Not in order by priority

1. Read the Bible in one year
2. Write a book
3. Clear my inbox
4. Read at least 12 books
5. Blog at least once a week
6. Knit 6 projects
7. Write an affirmation everyday
8. Make 3 quilts
9. Make 2 blankets
10. Learn to sew clothes
11. Work out a minimum of 3 times per week
12. Learn to bake bread, cake, and various types of cookies from scratch
13. Teach my daughter to read normal sight words
14. Play more board games with my kids at least once a week

Wow! That was 14. 🙂

I am very excited about this and I plan on keeping track of my progress. I may even blog at the end of every month about my status or progress.

Have you committed to completing any goals for yourself? If you don’t mind sharing, what are they?

No More Slug-Feeling Around Here

December 31, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

This morning I read a post on Mama Dweeb. She discussed a Polar Link watch watch that tracks your activity during the day. As I read her article I realized that although she was promoting the product, she was saying something very important. She wants to make her day better for herself.

What do I mean?

Well, what I’m saying is that she probably feels the way that many of us, moms, feel. We often do so much for other people, that we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. I know I did.

If you don’t know, I’ve just had my fourth child. With birthing this beauty over here into this world, I have put on more weight that I ever have in my life. No, I’m not overweight, but I’m not used to carring all this weight around, so there are times when I feel sluggish.

As I continued to feel this way for a few weeks, she’s almost 5 months now, I decided that I wanted to work out, drink more water, and eat healthier. This does not mean that I won’t eat things like this chocolate cake that I made the other night.

20131231-084708.jpgNor does it mean that I will track my weight to the point where I become a fanatic about working out. It just means that I am choosing to do something for myself before I take care of everyone else.

I work out to feel good about me. I don’t want to sit around all day feeling like one of the slugs from Disney’s movie Epic.

20131231-083336.jpg
That’s how I used to feel. Like the one on the left. I want to feel more like the one on the right. Yet, instead of looking at another slug-feeling lady like she’s crazy, I want to encourage her that she can feel good too.

I saw that movie, Epic, and those slugs did not know that they were slugs. They were pretty encouraging. They tried to move around like everyone else, but their nature just kept holding them back.

I found that I was kinda sluggish in nature. I wanted that to change. That’s why I work out. I either do 20 minutes of Zumba or I lug my beautiful children to the nearest gym and walk for 20 minutes on the treadmill. (It’s too cold outside to walk with my kids)

Recently my husband told me that the elliptical gives a full body workout. It’s hard, but it feels good in the end.

So to all you slug-feeling women out there…you can feel good too. It just going to take you doing something about it. 😉

To Things I Enjoy…

December 30, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

Today I am working on two things that I enjoy, my blog and knitting.

I am working on a hat pattern that I got off of Ravelry.  It’s called Child’s Self-striping Hat by Janet D. Russell.  I started working on it in the beginning of December.  It is a really easy pattern.  I had to get a circular needle that wouldn’t cause my stitches to stretch.  I am using the Adriafil Knitcol yarn in a rainbow color of pink, purple, and yellow.

I am making this for my baby girl.  I tried it on her and it is a little big, but that’s because I thought that here head was bigger than it is.  I know that’s funny, but it’s the truth.  She’ll be able to wear it when she hits 6 months.

If you are interested in making a hat like this one, check it out on Ravelry.

I will also be adding some content on my page about blogging, Twitter, and Facebook.  I have found that people have a lot of questions about the ways that they use the internet, but they aren’t sure what to ask. I have also been having a few conversations with my Twitter, Facebook and family about blogging intentions and techniques. I plan on adding a few posts to my site about topics like this.

If there are any topics that you would like to hear about, let me know. 🙂

Food for thought…

Sometimes…well I mean, we always need an accountability partner. Lisa Bevere was talking about having a partner for the study, but I think this also applies to everyday life.

My First Batch

December 24, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

I am so thankful. This year I received a Kitchen-Aid for Christmas. Well, it isn’t Christmas yet, but I got my gift early.

20131224-072338.jpg

Ok..ok

I decided to make some cookies. I have a friend that made me some oatmeal cookies. They were sooooo good. So, upon receiving my gift, I had determined that I would make my own.

20131224-072900.jpg

So I gathered all of my ingredients and I began to mix them. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about cooking. I think the reason for that is because I know how to cook, but I’ve always found baking intimidating. Now that I’ll be able to bake things with my new “assistant,” it shouldn’t be as hard.

20131224-073245.jpg

Once I mixed them, I scooped them out. My kids and I rolled them out into little balls and put them on the cookie sheet.

The smell of these cookies was so pleasant, even before I began to bake them. It was as if I had walked into the candle store at the mall. (I don’t know the name of it 🙂 )

20131224-073628.jpg

I made a batch of oatmeal and a batch of oatmeal raisin.

20131224-073644.jpg

Finally they were done. My kids and I sampled them, as they cooled off. They were delicious. If you don’t believe me this is the testimony of my son. “Mom you should be on one of those cooking shows.” Another satisfied customer said “Mom, these are so good!” Now recent studies in my kitchen have shown that I don’t do well with store brought cookies. 😉

I am very pleased with the results and so is my family.

I think I’m going to send a batch to my mom, very soon.

When I Call On Jesus

December 23, 2013 By Mrs. Mom 2 Comments

There are times in this life, when I just don’t feel like I am enough.

How can I do all that I am supposed to do? The dreams in my heart are too big for me. I have felt overwhelmed by it all at times. How can I do it…Lil’ ol’ me…

It’s when I take my focus off of me and look to Him, that I realize, I don’t have to do it all alone.

Everything changes with Jesus.

For with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26

Cherish The Ones That We Love

December 20, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

Today I thought about sharing multiple posts. Yet, I sit here right now, thinking of how important it is to me that I share it. Not because it happened to me, but because I’m a mom. I feel for each person in this story event.
Please know that I am telling this story from my memory. It was told to me by someone I hold very dear.

A family was together one evening. There was mother, a daughter, and two sons. The daughter, in the 8th grade and the sons were in 6th & 7th. The two older children were telling their mother what they wanted for Christmas. The mother reminded them that she would not be able to get them very many gifts because of the youngest son’s birthday. The older two children got very upset. The next day the teacher became concerned because they had cupcakes and things ready to celebrate the youngest son’s birthday. As a matter of fact, none of the kids were at school. They call the mom. She told that they were no at school because her youngest had committed suicide the previous night. He wrote a letter saying how sorry he was that they could not get what they wanted because of him. They found him in his room. He hung himself from the fan.

Hearing this story broke my heart. I thought about all of the children that I know. I felt that I as a parent have to make sure that I showy children love and pay attention to what they say. I have to be in tune with how they feel and pray that God keep my kids safe. I have no idea oh that mom feels, but I pray that God comfort and heal her heart.

Let’s cherish our kids. Let’s pay attention to what the say. Go can we help them cope with life and the challenges that they will face? And for that next child who feels the same way, I pray that the God of peace would keep you and help you through a very hard time in your life. In Jesus’ name. -Amen
