Can I Really Trust The Bible: Book Review

September 23, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 5 Comments

Can I Really Trust The Bible
Can I really trust the Bible? by Barry Cooper

When I originally sat down to start reading this book, I thought that I wouldn’t like it.  I wasn’t sure if it was one of those books that appeared to be pro-Christian, only for the reader to find out that it was very anti-Christian.  I thought that I would have to refute many of the author’s points in my review.  Needless to say, I was on guard.

From the beginning of the book. Barry Cooper jumps right in to the position that many believers, whether new or seasoned, find themselves in…trying not to be a doubting Thomas.  In today’s society we have all met someone that seems more educated than we are.  They seem to have thought harder and longer about the Bible and its ability to be trusted.  These individuals seem to study the history of the Bible, its compilation, its human authors, and specific portions that inspire…doubt.  All of these things put together can leave a believer feeling overwhelmed and at a standstill.  Yet Barry Cooper takes advantage of one thing that many believers forget,  the innate human ability to ask questions. In fact, God wants us to ask Him questions.

As I read through this book, I realized that it was an easy read.  It was not so complicated that it would turn away a new or unbeliever, but still filled with enough “meat” to fill the desires of a seasoned one.  I found that this book fed my intellectual desire to answer the questions that I had been asked over the years.  I had personally asked some of these questions and researched others.  Yet I found myself amazed at Mr. Cooper’s ability to sufficiently answer the question in just 80 pages.  When I say answer, I really mean that he answers the question, offers an example, and a reference…just in case you want to do some research for yourself.

I have heard some of the very statements that he used in the book given as reasons why the Bible could not be trusted.  I have to admit that I found myself smiling as he answered them and did not shy away from the questions that challenge our faith.  As I finished the book, it felt like I had just read a page turning novel.  Better yet, it felt like I knew Barry Cooper and we were discussing these questions together.  I know that sounds a bit outlandish, but he really addresses topics that I have only discussed with my closest family members, friends, spiritual leaders, and God.

This is a book that I am proud to have sitting on my bookshelf.  I would give it or recommend it to another person.  I would let my children read it.  I wish I had it years ago.  It would have prepared me for the many questions that I would hear as a believer. I have studied these questions and have learned a lot over the years, but I am very thankful that I received this complementary book from the publisher through Cross Focused Reviews to review.  I look forward to getting more books from The Good Book Company.  Judging from this book, they have a lot to offer.

In My Prayers…Autism

September 18, 2014 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

I do not have a child with Autism. However, I pray for all families that do. I pray for the children, some of which are now adults. I pray for our country…for an awakening…in all areas of mandated health care and all health care alone. I pray for healing…I pray for the truth to be revealed and change to come…(I didn’t know, until I did my own research. Now I know…now, you are in my prayers daily)

Booktube Video 1

September 17, 2014 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

If you recently read my post on “what’s new” you know that I was very excited about becoming a booktuber.  It is official.  I am one.

I did my first video earlier this week.

This particular video was on the books that I have recently purchased, the books that I was sent to review, and the book that I am currently reading.

The book that I am currently reading is also the book that the Christian Moms Read book club on Goodreads is reading until the end of October.

Check out the video.  Like, share, and leave your comments.  I hope you enjoy it.  Oh, and I promise that it will get better…it has to. 🙂

What’s New?! Books…

September 14, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 2 Comments

Over the past month, I’ve been doing some thinking.

That has brought me to this point.

I am so excited about what I am about to start doing.

What?

Are you on the edge of your seat?  🙂

Well, here it goes…

I am going to join the community of BookTubers…

YYYYYAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!

What does that mean?

Well, it means that I am about to dive deep into a community of people that love talking about books on YouTube.

I am looking forward to this.  I really enjoy blogging and reading, among many other things.  I’ve been trying to find something to “youtube” about, but I didn’t want it to be about my hair.  You know, I’m an African American woman with natural hair and although I like watching the “natural hair” videos, I decided not to start my own…but I digress. 🙂

BOOKS! BOOKS! MORE, MORE, MORE BOOKS!

Can you feel my excitement?! I’m sure you can.

I’m about to fall out of my seat. 🙂

On another note, about books…

I am also working on a project that has me excited times 2.

I’ll be cataloging my books.

Now for those of you who aren’t that much into books, you are probably thinking…”what? why?”

Well, when we moved, I was able to put my hands on all of my books.  I was able to see what I have, what I haven’t read, and what I want more of.  This led me to a decision that I want to have a system of knowing more about those topics.  I am really looking forward to this project.

YES!!! I AM A BOOK LOVER!!!

I buy books…digital books…hardback books…paperback books…kids books…cookbooks…crafty books…books, books, books….

So stay connected to my Facebook and Twitter page…and my blog,  if you want to see more of what will be happening with me and BOOKS.

I hope you have a blessed day.

Catching Up

August 22, 2014 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

Wheeeew!!!

It feels like I haven’t blogged in months, but to be honest…it has only been a month.

I feel like I haven’t discussed the things that have been on my heart and mind for quite some time.

Now for those of you who don’t blog, you might be thinking that I could easily discuss these thoughts with people in my life and …well, you are correct.

Still there is something about blogging that is different.  For someone like me, a writer at heart, blogging takes my natural love for words and my desire to express myself to a whole different level.

I’m saying “people like me”, but I believe that social media is proving that many of us in the world long for an outlet to express ourselves.

Anyway, I have been missing my blog. (those of you who blog probably know what that feels like)

I’ve been busy with grad school and my family. (Summertime)

Now that the summer is coming to a close, things will get back to normal, kinda.

A lot is going on in the world and a lot is happening inside of me as well.

Here’s to being back <3

Do you feel like you are coming back…lets catch up…

To Move Forward

July 19, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 2 Comments

This morning is sit, listening to the sound of the birds singing outside of my window. This window isn’t one that I normally have. For it’s a family window out of town. In the beautiful mountains. Here there is peace and tranquility. There is freedom. The freedoms feels almost limitless. What I mean is that the land is not bound by fences and walls. Instead our children can simply run free in the land.

We saw a bear about 50 feet away from us. We also saw the deer grazing the land. With all of this, I have taken time within myself to simply rest. I wanted to allow myself time to breath.

There are times when our entire being needs a break. God said that we should rest and we need to make sure that we are listening to what He has told us to do. It is when we find rest that we are able to move forward.

Life gets really busy and things happen. We have all of these family, work, school, friend, church, and various aspects of life to deal with. Many times we have no clue what we should do or say, but…I believe that it is in the quiet place of rest that we will hear The Lord guide us to a place where not only our soul finds rest, but the answers to all of the questions that our hearts ponder.

I needed this trip. I needed to be able to take a breath and rest. I needed to get away from all of the busyness. You can go on a vacation and not actually rest. You get so busy trying to have fun that it’s no longer rest. Instead it becomes a new job.

On this trip, we could have gotten really busy, but I chose to rest so that I could be rejuvenated enough to take some big steps in my daily life…to move forward.

Morning Pondering

July 17, 2014 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

I should be sleeping right now, but I can’t. I have so much on my mind right now. I was going to sit down and begin to complain through this post, I I have suddenly had a change of heart.

I am very well aware of many of my life’s problems. I have read many of the bad reports through the news and other forms of media. I have contemplated the negative. I have even taken the time to allow my mind to think the worst, which I don’t recommend. Yet in the midst of all of this, I was quickly reminded of how blessed I am.

I remembered all of the people and things that God has so graciously blessed me with. I am truly thankful.

I realize that I could be somewhere else doing anything else, but I’m here. I breathing, healthy, a mother, wife, daughter, friend, cousin, and so much more. So today this will be my mission. I will continue to reflect in God’s unfailing mercy toward me. I will remember His word that He has spoke over me, my family, my marriage, my children. I will reflect, remember, and remind myself that God has, is, and will continue to supply all of my needs.

I know all of this may seem a bit sporadic, but this is me this morning. I will refocus my thoughts and give everyone the attempts to take hold of my thoughts and consume me, to God

I am eternally thankful for God’s love, grace, and unmerited favor. I don’t deserve anything that I have. Yet He has seen fit to bless me abundantly.

My prayer for today is that my life may bring Him praise. That he may look upon my life and smell a pleasant aroma of worship.

Unto to you O God, on this day, I give You all that I am. Have your way with my life. For once again, I surrender my all to you. – in Jesus name…Amen
