Read to and with your child…

September 30, 2015 By Mrs. Mom 3 Comments

Read to and with your child

This post is going to be the first in, what I hope to be, a series of posts presenting and discussing children’s books.  Today, I just want to introduce the concept…

In my home, we take a lot of time to read.  Every month, my children get a book allowance and visit the library.  We have a reading area in our home and spend time reading everyday.  Well, just about everyday. 🙂  My children read for a  set amount of time when they come home from school and I read for at least an hour a day. I try to encourage my children to read in various ways.

As we take time to read, I have found such great joy in reading to my children.  Not only do I enjoy reading with my children, but I often find that I learn something new, as well.  I have also recognized the benefits in reading with my children.

Here are a few benefits of reading with my children

  • I get to connect with my children through, what we normally find to be, a great story.
  • I get to hear how much they are improving in their fluency and vocabulary.
  • I give them an opportunity to share something with me that they enjoy about the story.
  • I am able to explain some of the hard topics that they find difficult to comprehend when we read together.
  • I am also able to spot situations, placed in books, that I find conflicting to what we believe and what we teach our children.  With this, I now have an opportunity to teach them the differences between what we have read and what we believe.  (This one is one of my favorites)

In this series, I will be sharing books that I have read with my children. I’ll be discussing the topic of the books and doing a mini review of the book. Sometimes, I will even share thoughts from my children on the books. My hope is to encourage you to read to and with your children.

Today, I would like to encourage you to take some time away from your busy schedule to read to your children.  I am not telling you when to do it, how to do it, or for how long.  In our house, we don’t normally do bed time stories.  Instead we do afternoon or quiet-time reading.  My children can also read at any other time of day that they want.  I am simply suggesting that you take some time, if you don’t already, to enjoy a nice story with your children.  Perhaps you can take a trip to your local library, book store, or used book store to find some hidden treasures.

Whatever you decide to do, get excited about reading and enjoy sometime connecting with your children through a great story.

Do you have any children’s books to recommend?  Let me know in the comment section.  I’d love to hear from you.

Summer Fun

June 19, 2015 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

It summertime!!!

Yay!!!!

Do you know what that means?!

It means that my family and I get to do great things everyday…together. Now although my husband will be able to do things with us, the summer fun will mostly consist of my kids and I hanging out.

We love going to the pool, running through the sprinkler, and playing outside together. Although these are things that we can do all year long together, the best part is that no one has to be worry about homework, waking up for school, or even what day of the week it is. We just spend days of carefree hours together doing what we love.

I am so excited, that I feel like I am going to burst with joy.

Last night I said that I was excited that the summer was finally here. My younger son asked me if it was because we get to spend so much time together…YES!!! That is my reason (plus the fact that we don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn or before it).

Today, we slept in. We had a fun carefree breakfast, sat on the couch and watched a movie. We had a video game challenge, where my older son came out as the ultimate winner. We had a great lunch and now we are getting ready to have some of that good old outside fun.

Some of the things that I am looking forward to are going to the park with my kids and taking trips to explore. We also like to take trips to our local library, book store, and used book stores. We’ll probably do some art and craft activities that have to be done outside, since they are so messy. This will give me a chance to try some of those projects that I have on my Pinterest board for doing crafts with my kids.

I am looking forward to our baking sessions together. This is something that we do on breaks anyway, but during the summer, baking and coming up with new things is fun.

One of our summer projects will be to study the Bible together. I am really excited about this.

You know being a mom, is one of the best gifts that God could have ever given me. I get to share my life with these four great kids. I pour in to them and they make my life such an adventurous pleasure.

My heart is filled with so much joy right now.

I don’t know about you, but I just can’t get enough of my babies…although one of them would say that he isn’t a baby anymore…he’s still my baby.

I hope you plan on having a great summer like I do.

Ok…enough chat, I’ve got to run…literally… 🙂

A Break

November 12, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 1 Comment

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been kinda hard on myself. I have made sure that I am taking time to rest and I am focusing in on the things that I need to get done, but there is still something that I’m not doing.

I’m not giving myself a break.

Well, I really enjoy reading, doing projects, blogging. I have had a lot going on and this causes my hobbies to take a back burner. I don’t really like this idea, but I realize that I have to be realistic. For this reason, I have decided to give myself a break.

I’m telling myself that it’s ok.

I’m not going to be so hard on myself, especially when it comes to my hobbies and readings. I have to take care of my responsibilities and focus on the things that are most important right now. If I don’t, I’ll get side tracked.

I have to be honest though…I would be really nice it I were able to read a 300 page book in one night, but I can’t. That means that I have to be kind to myself. Yes, there are tons of books that I want to read, but I will just have to plan my readings out. I also have to pray and hope that I will read my books in time.

Today, I am really reminding myself that I am not perfect. Although I am striving for excellence and I want to be great, I am just a woman trying to be my best and asking God to let His glory be shown through me.

It’s not about how hard I can be on myself to get things done. I need to give myself a break and have faith that God’s will, will be accomplished in my life. I will read what needs to be read. I will have time to enjoy my hobbies…until I make time for all of that I will take time to focus on my responsibilities an education.

I will not be so hard on myself all of the time. I will give myself a break.

I want to encourage you to do the same thing. Look at your life. See if you are being too hard on yourself in some areas. Is the pressure necessary? Is there a way that you could be a little easier on yourself? How? If you take the time to reflect as I am, I think you will find that you too, can give yourself a break.

Updated Reading List

June 20, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 1 Comment

my library of books...
Books…Books…More Books

Over the past few years, I have found myself to be a bit of a book collector.

I collected a lot of books, but I didn’t read them as fast as I brought them.  I would have to say that this fact is still true today, especially since I now have a kindle.

That being said, I have decided to catch up on some of my reading, starting this summer.

I will be reading some of the following books…

The Book of Hebrews -from the Bible

“You Can begin Again” by Joyce Meyers

You Can Begin Again

“The Spiritual Man” by Watchman Nee

Spiritual Man

“Heaven Is For Real”  by Todd Burpo

Heaven Is For Real

“Child of Mine” by David & Beverly Lewis

Child Of Mine

Do you have a summer reading list?  I would love to know which books you will be diving into this summer. Leave a comment below and tell me all about your list…

A Joy of Mothering

April 19, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

It is known that I really enjoy reading. I’ve set reading goals and even studied English and Literature in college. Although I enjoy my studies, nothing brings me more pleasure that watching and listening to my children read.

Ice-man is at the end of his kindergarten year and he has been learning how to read. Today was a short day at school, so I was going to have to get him there early. I didn’t think that that we would have time to go over his books, but he surprised me.

Each time he brings home books, I read them to him first. Then he reads the books by himself. We offer him help, or course, but we mostly encourage him to sound out the words that are giving in trouble. Each set of books that he gets is harder that the previous set.

Today he had three new books and they seemed a bit challenging for him, at least from my perspective. Yet, he took those books and read them in less that 30 minutes. Oh how my heart smiled. I was so proud of my little buddy. He learned 6 new words and continued to read. That brought so much joy to my heart.

Gladly, I signed the slip for him to return to school. I think I am more excited that he is about getting the next set of book. I love watching my children learn and grow.
