Christian Mom Reads: August Book of the Month

August 2, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

It’s official, our book of the month for August has been chosen.  It is a book that I have had on my personal list for some time now.  Yet, one of our group members suggested it and I am really excited to read it.  It is called “My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife…and It’s Surprising Results”

August Book of the Month
August Book of the Month

Here is the description of the book from Amazon.com

Author Sara Horn always admired the Proverbs 31 wife, but when she became a busy writer and mother, she deemed this model to be dated and impossible. Or is it? Join Sara as she heads into a one-year domestic experiment and offers full access to see if this biblical model can be embraced by a modern woman–even one who can’t sew.

With humility and humor, Sara sets out to pursue the Proverbs 31 characteristics through immersing herself in all things domestic, but when her family’s situation changes and she must return to a full-time job, she’s forced to look at the Proverbs 31 woman with a whole new viewpoint. Through it all, she and readers discover:

  • what it means to be a godly woman and a wife
  • how investing in family and faith refines priorities as a spouse and a parent
  • how mistakes are opportunities for growth

This thought-provoking, surprising, and entertaining personal account will inspire women to try their own experiments in living out God’s purpose for their lives.

If you are interested in purchasing the book, it is available at most book stores and can be ordered from Amazon

I hope you decide to join in with us as we read this book…

Books to E-books

20130603-104951.jpg

Today I went to Barnes and Nobles. There isn’t anything special about that, but something is different. In my purse I had my Kindle Fire HD and I knew that I would not be making any purchases.  As I went from isle to isle, I asked myself why I was putting myself through the headache.  I really enjoy the atmosphere of book stores and I love books.  Yet recently I have decided to get rid of the majority of my books and replace them on my newly purchased Kindle.  This was not an easy decision.  I have six book shelves of books and more in boxes.  I love the way that books feel in my hand and I really enjoy reading them.  Still there is good reasoning behind my decision.  We will be moving soon and, well, my books take up space.  Not to mention that the more they weigh, the more they count against my household good weight in transportation.

With that in mind, I went out and go a Kindle Fire HD and have begun to transition.  I must say it is very hard.  I just brought books for my summer reading and now I have to find the best way to get rid of them that will generate a revenue to purchase new ones.  I do want to say that I am really enjoying my new Kindle, but I’m going to miss my books.  One thing I think I may do though, is…not go to a bookstore just to look around.  Then I’ll have book fever…

I’ll be ok…I’ll just take it one book to e-book at at time. 🙂

2013 Reading Goal

April 19, 2013 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

As you may know, last year, I set a reading goal for myself. With all of my reading for school, I read 8 of the 15 book goal. However, only one of these books were from my reading list. The others were from my school list.

This year, I have decided to challenge myself again. I’ve created my reading list, but I keep finding books to add to the list. It’s pretty crazy and I can’t help myself because I’m a book lover.

I’m just going to read as many of the books that are on my list as possible, but I’m still going to read the other books. The thing about books and reading is that I love this process. I love the feel of the books in my hand. I love the process of choosing and finding a great new book to read. I believe I’ve always been this way.

Ok, it’s obvious that I’ve digressed from my main topic, my reading goal. It’s ok though.

Steel, Roberts, and Macomber

December 4, 2012 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

As many of you know, I enjoy sitting down with a great book. I have tons of books, but I’ve decided to find a new author to read. I don’t know anything about these, but have heard that they are best selling authors. These authors are Danielle Steel, Nora Roberts, and Debbie Macomber. Now when I am reading these novels I am not wanting sex novels. I don’t want anything that vears too far off from what I believe.

I went to barnes and nobles an talked to the customer service representative. I asked about the normal content of the books and was told that none of these authors have inappropriate material within their books. I’ve tried to do some research and have found the same thing. I purchased five books yesterday. I have fourteen days to decide if I want to keep them or not. I will be reading the books and doing reviews on them, at least what I read of them. My hope is that I will enjoy the books, but I’ll see.

The first book is The Knitting Diaries by Debbie Macomber.

20121204-111339.jpg

The Twenty-First Wish by Debbie MacomberAnne Marie Roche and her adopted daughter, ten-year-old Ellen, have each written a list of twenty wishes—on which they included learning to knit. But Ellen has quietly added a twenty-first wish: that her mom will fall in love with Tim, Ellen’s birth father, who’s recently entered their lives….

Coming Unraveled by Susan Mallery

When Robyn Mulligan’s dreams of becoming a Broadway star give way to longing for her childhood home, she returns to Texas, running her grandmother’s knitting store. But the handsome, hot-tempered T. J. Passman isn’t making it easy on her. If he can learn to trust Robyn, and overcome his tragic past, they just might discover a passion like no other.

Return to Summer Island by Christina Skye

After a devastating car accident, Caro McNeal is welcomed by a community of knitters on Oregon’s sleepy Summer Island. She also finds meaning and purpose in the letters she exchanges with a marine serving in Afghanistan. But when life takes another unexpected turn, will Caro pick up the threads of hope, opening her heart to wherever it takes her? ~Good Reads Summary

The Next book is One Day at a Time by Danielle Steel
20121204-111401.jpg

Danielle Steel celebrates families of every stripe in her compelling new novel—a tale of three very different couples who struggle and survive, love, laugh, and learn to take life…

Coco Barrington was born into a legendary Hollywood family, her last name loaded with expectations. Her mother is a mega-bestselling author who writes under the name of Florence Flowers—and her sister, Jane, is one of Hollywood’s top producers. They’re not your typical family by any means.…Jane has lived with her partner, Liz, for ten years, in a solid, loving relationship. Florence, widowed but still radiant, has just begun a secret romance with a man twenty-four years her junior. And Coco, a law school dropout and the family black sheep, works as a dog walker, having fled life in the spotlight for the artsy northern California beach town of Bolinas.

But when Coco reluctantly agrees to dog-sit in Jane’s luxurious home, she soon discovers how much things can change in just a matter of days.…It turns out Jane’s house comes complete with an unexpected houseguest: Leslie Baxter, a dashing but down-to-earth British actor who’s fleeing a psycho ex-girlfriend. Their worlds couldn’t be more different. The attraction couldn’t be more immediate.

Suddenly Coco is seeing things differently: Leslie is not just a celebrity, he’s a single dad to an adorable six-year-old girl. Her mother is not just a self-centered walking advertisement for great cosmetic surgery, she’s a woman in love, with vulnerability and new insight. And Jane and Liz are about to take the bravest plunge of all—into parenthood. As Coco contemplates a future with one of Hollywood’s hottest stars, as her mother and sister settle into their lives, old wounds are healed and new familes are formed—some traditional, some not so traditional, but all bonded by love.

With wit and intelligence, Danielle Steel’s new novel explores love in all its guises, taking us into the lives of three unusual but wonderfully realcouples. Funny, sexy, and wise, One Day at a Time is at once moving, thought provoking, and utterly impossible to put down. ~Good Reads Summary

The third book is First Impressions by Nora Roberts

20121204-111423.jpg

Escaping the rat race and the lure of gold-digging women, wealthy businessman Vance Banning moves to a small, rural retreat, telling the townsfolk that he’s an out-of-work carpenter. All he wants is peace, quiet and to keep away from women. So the last thing he needs is a charitable neighbor–especially a beautiful, gracious and persistent neighbor of the female persuasion–but there’s something about Shane Abbott he just can’t ignore. Vance is certain his cover story will stop his lovely neighbor from getting too friendly, but Shane is determined to break down his resistance. Vance has been burned once, so only a fool would fall for the same innocent act twice. And he’s no fool. But he has no idea how relentless Shane Abbott can be when it comes to giving a helping hand–or a loving heart.

He needed to simplify his life and mend his broken heart. She was searching for a place to finally fit in and a man who could love her for who she was. Together they discover that all they really needed was each other, and that love is the greatest Christmas gift of all.  ~Good Reads Summary

The fourth book is 44 Charles Street by Danielle Steel

20121204-111444.jpg

A magical transformation takes place in Danielle Steel’s luminous new novel: strangers become roommates, roommates become friends, and friends become a family in a turn-of-the-century house in Manhattan’s West Village.

The plumbing was prone to leaks, the furniture rescued from garage sales. And every square inch was being devotedly restored to its original splendor—even as a relationship fell to pieces. Now Francesca Thayer, newly separated from her lawyer boyfriend Todd, is desperate. The owner of a struggling art gallery, and suddenly the sole mortgage payer on her Greenwich Village townhouse, Francesca does the math and then the unimaginable. She puts out an advertisement for boarders. Soon her house becomes a whole new world.

First comes Eileen, a fresh, pretty L.A. transplant, now a New York City schoolteacher. Then there’s Chris, a young father struggling with a troubled ex-wife and the challenge of parenting a seven-year-old son who visits every other weekend. The final tenant is Marya, a celebrated cookbook author hoping to start a new chapter in her life after the death of her husband. As Francesca’s art gallery begins to find its footing and Todd moves on to another woman, she discovers that her accidental tenants have become the most important people in her life.

As the roommates bond, and the house fills with the aroma of Marya’s exquisite cuisine, there are shadows as well as light. Naïve Eileen explores the precarious boundaries of online dating with a series of strangers. Chris’s custody fight for his son escalates to devastating levels. Marya faces an unexpected choice that will take her into untested waters. And Francesca herself will contemplate what had seemed impossible: opening her heart once more.

Over the course of one amazing, unforgettable, ultimately life-changing year, the house at 44 Charles Street fills with laughter, heartbreak, and, always, hope. In the hands of master storyteller Danielle Steel, it’s a place those who visit will never want to leave.  ~Good Reads Summary

The fifth and final book is From the Heart by Nora Roberts

I am really excited about these books.  It may be because the covers of the books are so beautiful.  I just need to get into the contents of the pages.  Well, I’ll be digging in to them soon.  Once I get done, I’ll write a review of each book, but I think I already said that.  I think I’m babbling now…on to the reading. 🙂

The Unbeatable Spirit of Faith

June 18, 2012 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

This morning I needed a bit of a pick me up. I have a lot to do today and many times with so much going on, it’s easy to get discouraged. Knowing this, I decided to be proactive. I grabbed a quick inspirational read that would get my day going in the right direction.

20120618-090307.jpg
Great read for this morning

“The Unbeatable Spirit of Faith” by Gloria Copeland did the trick. Packed with scripture and knowledgable quotes from the word of God, it affirmed in my spirit that

all things are possible with God

So now it’s up and at’em with my day as I believe God is able in every situation of my life.

The Scarlet Thread

June 3, 2012 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

20120603-113047.jpgThis year is the first year that I have set a goal for reading. I’m currently in school and my family stays pretty busy, but after doing some research and trying to plan my days, I came across something that suggested that I should always make time for “sharpening the saw.” This term and idea was coined by Stephen Covey. I will be discussing this further in another post, but for now, I will say that it means doing what is needed to get rest and take a moment to have fun too. Fun is healthy you know?! Well, the right type of fun anyway. My reading goal is apart of me sharpening the saw. Yes 15 books is a bit much, but why not give it a shot?

The book that am reading now is “The Scarlet Thread” by Francine Rivers. She is a wonderful writer. All of the books that I have read by her have sucked me into the world that she has created and that is what I enjoy most. Sometimes it’s like going on an adventure. So that you know what the book is about, here is the summary that is included on the back cover of the book:

Young pioneer on the Oregon Trail. She is filled with anger at being uprooted from her home.

Two women, centuries apart, a joined together through a tattered journal as they contend with God, husbands- even themselves- until they fall into the arms of the One who loves them unconditionally.

Doesn’t that sound interesting?! Well, I can’t wait to read it. Honestly, it may take me a while and I may have to push myself at first, but I want to read this book and I’m going to…

Feel free to join me.
