Currently Reading: Unbreak My Heart

January 7, 2015 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

As you know my reading goal for the year is to read 50 books. That equals out to a minimum of 1 book per week. I’m currently reading 2.

The one that seems to have more of my attention at the moment is “Unbreak My Heart” by Toni Braxton.

As I read it, I find that I have a lot to say. If only I could have a conversation with Toni Braxton…I’ll save that for my review.

Below you will find my progress and a bit more information about the book.

Happy Wednesday!

Keeping Track Of My Reading Goals

January 3, 2015 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

IMG_0079-1.JPG

Over the past few years, I have had some lofty reading goals.  They were hard for me to achieve.  I think I lacked focus and drive.  As lofty as they were, they weren’t anything like the goals that I have set for myself this year.

I have decided to read a minimum of 50 books.  Although I haven’t sat down to write out my list just yet, I am working on it.  My goal is to read at least one book per week.  That would equal around 50-52 books per year.  After reading “Read for Your Life” by Pat Williams, I really believe that I can do this.  I’ll be adding books to my reading list here.

I have had a Goodreads account for quite some time and although I like what they have to offer, I have decided that I want to be able to utilize my personal site in tracking my progress this year, in combination with Goodreads, of course.

So, if you see a lot of different posts or types of information, it’s just to keep me motivated and help me track my progress.

For instance, in the right sidebar, you will find my reading challenge status.  It looks like this…

2015 Reading Challenge

I have also decided to read through the Bible this year. My progress can be found in the right sidebar as well. I am tracking it in pages.

Bible Reading Progress

I have a book club on Goodreads and the books that we have read can be found in the right sidebar as well.

Goodreads Book Club Reads

On the left side bar, you will find the group read for the month. (This month’s group read is The Five Love Languages of Children)

Book of the Month Snapshot

Below that is a list of books that I have recently reviewed.

Recently Reviewed Books Snapshot

Below that I also have the books that I am currently reading, books on hold, and books that I have recently finished reading.

Book Status Snapshot

I couldn’t get it all in the snapshot, but this list also includes the books that I haven’t read yet.   There are a lot more than are listed here currently.  I will be taking the time to list them.  Hopefully this will be a quick list.  I have a lot of books to read and I will have a library page to post those to.

Now all of this is pretty simple, but one of the main things that I am going to start doing, in conjunction with my book reviews, is a post on each book that I begin reading.  It will have a progress bar that I’ll be updating and a brief synopsis on the book as well, from a reputable site.  This is all to help me, but if the process gets too tedious, I will change it.

The book reviews will be separate and the currently reading post will look something like this…

Happy Reading!!!

Can I Really Trust The Bible: Book Review

September 23, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 5 Comments

Can I Really Trust The Bible
Can I really trust the Bible? by Barry Cooper

When I originally sat down to start reading this book, I thought that I wouldn’t like it.  I wasn’t sure if it was one of those books that appeared to be pro-Christian, only for the reader to find out that it was very anti-Christian.  I thought that I would have to refute many of the author’s points in my review.  Needless to say, I was on guard.

From the beginning of the book. Barry Cooper jumps right in to the position that many believers, whether new or seasoned, find themselves in…trying not to be a doubting Thomas.  In today’s society we have all met someone that seems more educated than we are.  They seem to have thought harder and longer about the Bible and its ability to be trusted.  These individuals seem to study the history of the Bible, its compilation, its human authors, and specific portions that inspire…doubt.  All of these things put together can leave a believer feeling overwhelmed and at a standstill.  Yet Barry Cooper takes advantage of one thing that many believers forget,  the innate human ability to ask questions. In fact, God wants us to ask Him questions.

As I read through this book, I realized that it was an easy read.  It was not so complicated that it would turn away a new or unbeliever, but still filled with enough “meat” to fill the desires of a seasoned one.  I found that this book fed my intellectual desire to answer the questions that I had been asked over the years.  I had personally asked some of these questions and researched others.  Yet I found myself amazed at Mr. Cooper’s ability to sufficiently answer the question in just 80 pages.  When I say answer, I really mean that he answers the question, offers an example, and a reference…just in case you want to do some research for yourself.

I have heard some of the very statements that he used in the book given as reasons why the Bible could not be trusted.  I have to admit that I found myself smiling as he answered them and did not shy away from the questions that challenge our faith.  As I finished the book, it felt like I had just read a page turning novel.  Better yet, it felt like I knew Barry Cooper and we were discussing these questions together.  I know that sounds a bit outlandish, but he really addresses topics that I have only discussed with my closest family members, friends, spiritual leaders, and God.

This is a book that I am proud to have sitting on my bookshelf.  I would give it or recommend it to another person.  I would let my children read it.  I wish I had it years ago.  It would have prepared me for the many questions that I would hear as a believer. I have studied these questions and have learned a lot over the years, but I am very thankful that I received this complementary book from the publisher through Cross Focused Reviews to review.  I look forward to getting more books from The Good Book Company.  Judging from this book, they have a lot to offer.

Below you will find the Booktube video that I posted on Youtube.

Booktube Video 1

September 17, 2014 By Mrs. Mom Leave a Comment

If you recently read my post on “what’s new” you know that I was very excited about becoming a booktuber.  It is official.  I am one.

I did my first video earlier this week.

This particular video was on the books that I have recently purchased, the books that I was sent to review, and the book that I am currently reading.

The book that I am currently reading is also the book that the Christian Moms Read book club on Goodreads is reading until the end of October.

Check out the video.  Like, share, and leave your comments.  I hope you enjoy it.  Oh, and I promise that it will get better…it has to. 🙂

What’s New?! Books…

September 14, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 2 Comments

Over the past month, I’ve been doing some thinking.

That has brought me to this point.

I am so excited about what I am about to start doing.

What?

Are you on the edge of your seat?  🙂

Well, here it goes…

I am going to join the community of BookTubers…

YYYYYAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!

What does that mean?

Well, it means that I am about to dive deep into a community of people that love talking about books on YouTube.

I am looking forward to this.  I really enjoy blogging and reading, among many other things.  I’ve been trying to find something to “youtube” about, but I didn’t want it to be about my hair.  You know, I’m an African American woman with natural hair and although I like watching the “natural hair” videos, I decided not to start my own…but I digress. 🙂

BOOKS! BOOKS! MORE, MORE, MORE BOOKS!

Can you feel my excitement?! I’m sure you can.

I’m about to fall out of my seat. 🙂

On another note, about books…

I am also working on a project that has me excited times 2.

I’ll be cataloging my books.

Now for those of you who aren’t that much into books, you are probably thinking…”what? why?”

Well, when we moved, I was able to put my hands on all of my books.  I was able to see what I have, what I haven’t read, and what I want more of.  This led me to a decision that I want to have a system of knowing more about those topics.  I am really looking forward to this project.

YES!!! I AM A BOOK LOVER!!!

I buy books…digital books…hardback books…paperback books…kids books…cookbooks…crafty books…books, books, books….

So stay connected to my Facebook and Twitter page…and my blog,  if you want to see more of what will be happening with me and BOOKS.

I hope you have a blessed day.

Updated Reading List

June 20, 2014 By Mrs. Mom 1 Comment

my library of books...
Books…Books…More Books

Over the past few years, I have found myself to be a bit of a book collector.

I collected a lot of books, but I didn’t read them as fast as I brought them.  I would have to say that this fact is still true today, especially since I now have a kindle.

That being said, I have decided to catch up on some of my reading, starting this summer.

I will be reading some of the following books…

The Book of Hebrews -from the Bible

“You Can begin Again” by Joyce Meyers

You Can Begin Again

“The Spiritual Man” by Watchman Nee

Spiritual Man

“Heaven Is For Real”  by Todd Burpo

Heaven Is For Real

“Child of Mine” by David & Beverly Lewis

Child Of Mine

Do you have a summer reading list?  I would love to know which books you will be diving into this summer. Leave a comment below and tell me all about your list…
